Diploma Ceremony in Honour of the New Pro Futura Scientia XIII Fellows

Selected in tough competition among a total of 33 candidates - nominated by 16 universities in five
countries - five young, talented scholars were recently announced as new Fellows of the Pro Futura
Scientia programme. In mid-September, a ceremony in honour of this thirteenth generation of Pro
Futura scholars was held at the Collegium.

At the ceremony, Fredrik Charpentier Ljungqvist (Department of History, Stockholm University);
Eric Cullhed (Department of Linguistics and Philology, Uppsala University); Karin Jensen (Depart-
ment of Clinical Neuroscience, Karolinska Institutet); Sarah Nouwen (Faculty of Law, University of
Cambridge. In absentia); and H. Orri Stefánsson (Department of Philosophy, Stockholm University)
were welcomed into the community of now over 50 researchers, who have been admitted to the pro-
gramme through the years.

After individual introductions of the scholars, and a flower and diploma ceremony, the new Fellows
were invited to give brief presentations of the research they aim to carry out during their time in the
programme. The proposed research projects cover a wide span of themes and range from Unexplored
Rooms: Placebo Effects in Unexpected Contexts (Jensen) and International Norms in Peace Negotia-
tions (Nouwen), to Decision-making at the Extremes: Environmental Catastrophes and Radical Un-
certainty (Stefánsson), The Language of Aesthetic Description in Classical Antiquity (Cullhed), and
Disentangling Climatic and Sociopolitical Factors for Food Insecurity in Northern Europe 1500–1800
(Charpentier-Ljungqvist).

A musical performance by a string quartet from the Uppsala University Royal Academic Orchestra,
followed by comments and reflections by Göran Blomqvist (CEO, RJ) and Björn Wittrock (former
Principal, SCAS) on their experiences of the Pro Futura Scientia programme 1999-2018 rounded up
the ceremony.

The first generation of Pro Futura Fellows were admitted in 1999, when SCAS and RJ initiated the
programme in order to provide optimal conditions and an attractive career path for young, promising
scholars, enabling them to pursue curiosity-driven research and develop as researchers.
